ApplicationFor this project, we worked closely with the client to produce a hybrid structure with an all-GRP fibreglass composite roof walkway, landings, ladders and stairs. These were married to a galvanized steel guard rail. Installed by the client, the completed rooftop walkway structure now provides a safe, durable and low maintenance means of access for working at height.
By using fibreglass for the load bearing stringers, in place of steel, we achieved a significant reduction in the overall weight. As a result, we greatly reduced the applied load being placed on this historic building by the rooftop walkway. We calculated that the additional weight of a steel structure of the same dimensions would have been to be in excess of 20 tonnes.

York Railway Station was built by the North Eastern Railway in 1877. At the time of its completion, it was the largest station in the world. It is now a Grade 2 listed building.
GRP fibreglass products are one quarter of the weight of the equivalent sections made from steel and two thirds that of aluminium. This design achieved a significant reduction in dead load on the building.
SummaryWith a relatively short lead time, we worked with Neary Rail of Manchester, the appointed contractor for the works. Alongside their designers, we were tasked with replacing the existing walkways over the barrel curved, wrought iron glazed roof of York Station.
Respecting the listed status of the structure required expert design. Plus, a tight deadline necessitated close communication between all parties. This was key in the successful delivery of the project.
Working from the client’s drawings, we were responsible for the supply, fabrication and delivery to site of all the GRP structural and roof walkway elements. These were pre-assembled at our workshops in Selby, before being disassembled and transported to the site.
The reduced weight of the walkway components brought desirable efficiencies, when it came to transportation and assembly. Fitting rooftop walkways is always challenging, but by using GRP sections of this size, Neary were able to safely move all the sections and panels by hand. Despite the difficult access for the fitting, the final result was a walkway delivered on time and to the client’s satisfaction.
