Glass fibre reinforced plastics (GRP) are now widely specified by engineers and commonly used in the refurbishment of existing structures. Another example shown here is on the UK railway network, where the combined advantages of a reduction in load on the existing structure, along with durability, electrical non-conductivity and low maintenance made for a perfect solution when replacing an end-of-life wooden structure.
Some benefits of composites:
Light weight = decreased load, high strength, low maintenance costs, easy to install, non-corroding & electrically non-conductive.
Here, the requirement was to replace a 100m long wooden maintenance walkway running beneath the tracks on Paddock Viaduct, Huddersfield.
Network Rail engineers identified the existing walkway as having ageing/decaying timber boards and opted for an all-GRP fibreglass structure consisting of a sub-frame of load bearing sections, solid topped anti-slip GRP grating deck panels and heightened GRP guardrails for fall protection.
The confined space for decommissioning the old structure and fitting of the new, at height and above water and road, made this a challenging project from a safety perspective.
The works were successfully completed by the Yorkshire based civil engineering company, Construction Marine Ltd
