The advantages found in exploiting the properties of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP / GRP) are now apparent to engineers in the refurbishment of existing structures. Nowhere more so than on the UK railway infrastructure. Low maintenance, light weight, durability and ease of installation are all desirable characteristics and using GRP as a building material also makes for a highly cost-efficient choice.
Standards – Road over-bridges require a minimum parapet height of 1500mm, increasing to 1800mm over railway tracks and overhead line equipment (OHLE) installations.
To bring this road-over-rail bridge back in-line with current specifications, an agreement was reached between Network Rail and Stockton Borough Council to remove an original parapet brick wall and rebuild it using reconstituted stone blocks and composite coping in the form of a GRP parapet.
Situated on the B1274 Junction Road, Stockton-on Tees, the newly constructed parapet wall was then topped and extended using bespoke manufactured GRP steeple coping by Evergrip Limited. The GRP parapet wall coping was installed along the full length of the bridge to increase the minimum parapet height which now prevents climbing and improves safety.
The appointed contractor was Construction Marine Ltd and the works were undertaken during night shifts with minimal disruption to what is normally a busy road.
